What is airway
orthodontics?

Traditional orthodontics straightens teeth. Airway orthodontics goes deeper โ€” treating the root cause of crooked teeth, sleep problems, and breathing issues. Not just the symptoms.

The Difference

Why airway orthodontics
changes everything

Most orthodontic problems aren’t caused by genetics. They’re caused by how the jaw and airway develop during childhood โ€” influenced by breathing patterns, tongue position, and muscle habits.

When a child breathes through their mouth instead of their nose, the tongue drops to the floor of the mouth. This restricts jaw growth, narrows the airway, crowds the teeth, and sets off a cascade of health issues that can last a lifetime.

Airway orthodontics addresses these root causes โ€” not just the crooked teeth that result from them. The goal isn’t just a straighter smile. It’s better breathing, better sleep, better focus, and better health.

Traditional Orthodontics
โ†’ Focuses on straightening teeth
โ†’ Often requires extractions to make space
โ†’ Permanent retainers needed for life
โ†’ Relapse rates up to 90% without retention
โ†’ Doesn’t address breathing or airway
โ†’ Treats the effect, not the cause

The Root Causes

It’s not genetics.
It’s how we breathe.

Research now shows that the majority of orthodontic problems are caused by soft tissue dysfunction โ€” not heredity. These habits start early and compound over time.

๐Ÿ‘„
Mouth Breathing
When a child breathes through their mouth, the tongue drops down. Without the tongue pressing against the roof of the mouth, the upper jaw doesn’t develop properly โ€” leading to narrow arches, crowded teeth, and a restricted airway.

๐Ÿ‘…
Incorrect Tongue Position
The tongue is nature’s palate expander. When it rests in the wrong position โ€” on the floor of the mouth instead of the roof โ€” the maxilla fails to develop to its full genetic potential.

๐Ÿ”„
Reverse Swallowing
An incorrect swallowing pattern pushes the tongue forward against the teeth instead of up against the palate. This restricts mandibular development and contributes to Class II malocclusion.

๐Ÿ‘ถ
Thumb & Pacifier Habits
Extended sucking habits alter the development of the palate and jaw, creating open bites, crossbites, and airway restrictions that carry into adolescence and adulthood.

๐Ÿ˜ด
Sleep-Disordered Breathing
Snoring, restless sleep, and obstructive sleep events in children are often caused by underdeveloped jaws and narrow airways โ€” not just large tonsils. The jaw is the structural foundation.

๐Ÿ”—
Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia)
A restricted lingual frenulum prevents the tongue from reaching the roof of the mouth, directly contributing to mouth breathing, poor jaw growth, and airway dysfunction from infancy onward.

“You start treatment when you discover the poor oral habits that are going to create problems and you address the habits, not the teeth.”

Our Treatment Systems

Advanced appliances.
Proven results.

Dr. K uses multiple certified appliance systems โ€” including his own proprietary BioX (Bio Expansion) protocol โ€” each designed for specific ages and conditions. All are non-invasive, worn primarily while sleeping, and designed to work with your body’s natural growth.

๐Ÿ”ต
Vivos System
A three-stage system (Starter, Grow, Way) that establishes nasal breathing, develops the arch, and aligns teeth โ€” from primary dentition through permanent. Worn while sleeping.

๐Ÿ”ท
Myobrace System
A staged myofunctional orthodontic system that corrects habits, expands arches, and aligns teeth by addressing the root causes of malocclusion. Ages 3โ€“15+ with adult versions available.

โš™๏ธ
BioX (Bio Expansion)
Dr. K’s own advanced expansion protocol. BioX uses biomimetic technology to achieve slow, biological growth of the jaws โ€” fine-tuned to each patient’s own natural growth speed. No aggressive mechanical forces. Your body leads, the appliance guides.

๐Ÿ’ช
Myofunctional Therapy
Lip trainers, tongue exercises, and habit correction protocols that retrain the oral muscles to function correctly โ€” essential for long-term stability of any airway treatment.

Common Questions

What parents and
patients ask us

How is airway orthodontics different from regular braces?
Traditional braces move teeth into alignment but don’t address why they were crooked in the first place. Airway orthodontics treats the underlying cause โ€” typically poor breathing habits and underdeveloped jaws โ€” so the teeth align naturally and the results are more stable long-term. Many patients avoid braces entirely.

At what age should my child be evaluated?
We can begin treatment as early as age 3. In fact, the earlier we intervene, the more we can guide natural jaw growth and prevent problems from compounding. If your child snores, breathes through their mouth, or has any of the symptoms on our screening questionnaire, don’t wait โ€” earlier is always better.

Can adults benefit from airway orthodontics?
Absolutely. While results in adults take longer since growth is complete, airway appliances can still improve breathing, reduce snoring, alleviate teeth grinding, and improve sleep quality. Many adults see significant improvements in symptoms they’ve lived with for years.

Does my child have to wear the appliance all day?
No. Most of our appliances โ€” including Myobrace, Vivos, and BioX โ€” are worn for just 1โ€“2 hours during the day plus overnight while sleeping. Your child can eat, speak, and go to school normally.

What does “certified airway orthodontist” mean?
Dr. K is certified through Airway Health Solutions (AHS), the leading accreditation body for airway-focused dental and orthodontic care. This certification requires advanced training in airway diagnosis, treatment planning, and appliance systems beyond what standard orthodontic training provides. Dr. K is the first orthodontist in Southern California to achieve this certification.

Will insurance cover airway orthodontics?
Many orthodontic insurance plans cover a portion of airway treatment. We also work with medical insurance for sleep-related diagnoses. Our team will help you understand your benefits and maximize your coverage. We offer complimentary airway evaluations so there’s no financial barrier to finding out if treatment is right for you.
